At Histrica, every kitten is born from true passion and raised in an environment filled with love. Inspired from childhood by my uncle, a renowned veterinarian and geneticist in Istria, I learned that breeding is not just a science but a calling—one that demands patience, care, and dedication.
My Maine Coons, the true “gentle giants” of the feline world, are raised with particular attention to their health, temperament, and well-being. Sociable, even-tempered, and affectionate, they grow up at the heart of family life to become loving, well-adjusted companions—cats who are truly “comfortable in their paws.”
My goal is to preserve the beauty and nobility of this breed while sharing its wonderful temperament with families ready to love them as much as I do.
The Histrica Story
My love for animals has been woven into my life since childhood. Growing up on the beautiful Istrian peninsula, I spent my summers on my uncle’s farm, where animals were not just a backdrop but the beating heart of everyday life. My uncle was a renowned veterinarian, specializing in horses, and an exceptional geneticist. With vision and patience, he set out to improve the milk yield of Istrian sheep by crossing them with Friesians.
It was far from easy. While prized for their milk production, Friesians could not tolerate Istria’s hot climate. The work required years of perseverance, observation, and meticulous selection. There were many losses along the way, as only the strongest and healthiest individuals could adapt and thrive. Little by little, thanks to his determination and respect for both breeds, my uncle succeeded in developing sheep capable of producing a substantial quantity of milk while withstanding Istria’s harsh summers.
As a child, I often witnessed births and sometimes even helped during those delicate moments. Many times, it was a fragile struggle between life and death, with the outcome uncertain until the very last instant. These experiences left a deep mark on me. I learned that breeding is not only about creating life: it is about protecting it, supporting it, and accepting both its joys and its trials. This understanding accompanies me today in my own path as a breeder. As with the sheep, breeding Maine Coons also brings moments of happiness and struggle. Every birth is a miracle, but it comes with responsibilities, care, and at times sadness. The lessons I learned on my uncle’s farm continue to guide me, reminding me that breeding is not just a science—it is a vocation that requires patience, dedication, and above all, love.
These early experiences left a lasting imprint. Very early on, I surrounded myself with animals—dogs and cats, often rescued from the street—and each taught me something about compassion and loyalty. My first purebred companions were Great Danes, the “gentle giants” of the canine world. Their noble bearing, loving hearts, and loyalty showed me what it means to share your life with an animal that gives more love than it receives.
I recognized that same spirit when I discovered Maine Coons. With their majestic presence, affectionate temperament, and playful, loving nature, they struck me as the feline reflection of my Great Danes. Just as Great Danes are known as the “gentle giants” among dogs, Maine Coons embody that same grace and warmth in the feline universe. Their wonderful character won my heart and inspired me to dedicate my passion to them.
When the time came to begin my own journey as a breeder, I wanted a name that carried the essence of my origins. As a native of Istria, I chose the name Histrica—a tribute to my homeland, my roots, and those summers on my uncle’s farm where my story with animals truly began. At Histrica, my aim is to honor the breed’s unique qualities by raising Maine Coons of exceptional health, character, and beauty, while sharing their affectionate, loving nature with families who will cherish them as much as I do.
